Nine people were killed and three injured when the roof of a house collapsed in Lahore, according to rescue officials, who said the injured had been taken to a nearby hospital and that efforts to clear the debris were continuing (Geo News).
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz expressed grief at the loss of life and directed authorities to ensure the best possible medical treatment for the injured.
In a separate incident, two children were killed and two other people injured when the roof of a house collapsed during rainfall in Faisalabad.
The deaths come weeks after 14 children died when the roof of a tutoring centre collapsed in Lahore. Those children were aged between five and 16, most of them under nine.
Structural failure has been the leading cause of death through this monsoon season nationally, ahead of flash floods, lightning and electrocution — a pattern the National Disaster Management Authority has reported consistently in its situation updates since the season opened on June 26.
The Meteorological Department has forecast a widespread spell of rain running to August 5, with heavy falls expected across much of Punjab including Lahore.
