At least nine people were killed and 27 injured when a pile of confiscated explosives detonated at a police station in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), the district police chief said on Saturday, days after a car blast in New Delhi killed eight people.
The dead included police officers, government officials and forensic personnel who were examining the explosives at the time, Nalin Prabhat, director general of police for the IIOJK, told a news conference.
He said the cause of the explosion late Friday and the extent of the damage were being investigated.

Indicating that there was no involvement of militants in the incident, Prabhat said forensic and chemical tests of previously recovered explosive materials were underway when the “accidental blast” took place on Friday night.
“Any further speculation as to the cause of this incident is unnecessary,” he said.
The identification of the bodies was ongoing, as some were completely burnt, a police source said.
“The intensity of the explosion was such that some parts of the body were recovered from nearby houses, about 100-200 meters away from the police station,” the source said.
Earlier, a local police official told Reuters that an explosion occurred at the Nowgam police station. The official said the fire has engulfed the complex and fire tenders have rushed to the spot.
The explosion came four days after a deadly car explosion in India’s capital New Delhi killed at least eight people in what the government called a terrorist attack.
Nuclear-armed neighbors India and Pakistan have waged periodic wars over the disputed territory for decades, and Pakistan claims the IIOJK under the UN resolution.
