NEW YORK:
Gracie Mansion’s historical halls, the official residence of the New York Mayor, reacted with a celebration and solidarity as the city hosted the first reception of Pakistan’s heritage day on Thursday, coinciding with the 78th anniversary of the day. The event, attended by senior and government officials, political leaders, diplomats and a large number of prominent members of the Pakistani-American community, emphasized both the contributions of the diaspora and the dimensional bonds between Pakistan and the United States.
Welcoming the concentration, Mayor Eric Adams praised the Pakistani-American community for its “excellent contributions” to the social, cultural and economic life of New York. “Our power lies in our diversity and the Pakistani community is a vital part of the global identity of this city,” he said, confirming the commitment of its administration to deal with all international communities.
A moment of silence was observed to honor the victims of recent floods in Pakistan, reflecting the solidarity of New Yorkers with the affected.
In his observations, Consul General Aamer Ahmed Atozai thanked the Mayor Adams for recognizing Pakistan’s inheritance day and for recognizing the role of the diaspora. He noted that Pakistan’s heritage had its roots not only in his independence in 1947 but also in ancient cultures, pluralistic traditions and cultural wealth that “continue to inspire the world”.
Atozai also emphasized community’s achievements in various areas – from medical and academic community to technology, public service and arts – making it an integral part of New York’s political and economic fabric. Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, a permanent Pakistani spokesman in the United Nations, congratulates the community on the Day of Independence and praised her role in strengthening Pakistan-UPA relationships.
He reiterated that Pakistan was fully capable of defending his sovereignty, while remaining committed to peace, progress and international cooperation. Both envoys expanded gratitude to the mayor’s office for international affairs, led by Commissioner Aissata Camara, to support the construction of the milestone celebration.
In the evening, it ended with a confirmation of the constant bonds of friendship between Pakistan and the United States, with the vibrant Pakistani-American community celebrated as a vital bridge connecting the two nations.
