Pakistan’s new coach, Mike Hesson, appeared in a recent interview on the PCB podcast and shared his philosophy and vision for the future of the team.
Speaking honestly with former test cricket Bazid Khan, Hesson discussed his approach to players’ development, team culture and what he hopes to achieve during his term with Pakistan’s national team.
Hesson, who brings years of experience from previous roles of coaching, including the New Zealand cricket team, underlined that his focus as a coach does not dictate how players must perform but rather maximize their individual talents.
“The workout is to try to maximize talent. It is not necessary to tell them about the biggest things I have played during my time,” Hesson said.
He also emphasized the importance of building strong relationships with players.
“As soon as you understand a player’s journey, you can add value,” he explained, noting that training is a more holistic approach and not a model of a size.
His strategy revolves around the understanding of each player’s history, what motivates them and their specific goals before it offers customized guidance.
For Hesson, communication plays a central role. “Players deserve the right to know what they are expected to do,” he added, stressing that technical training and continuous observation are the key to his method.
“It’s about observing a player first before deciding when to intervene,” he said.
A significant part of the Hesson plan involves closely collaborating with the Pakistani domestic circuit to identify the talents. Noted the importance of developing clear trails for emerging players.
“Groups of players will be found where I will be willing to go and take a look, talk and meet players,” he said. This will ensure that players are well trained, adaptable and ready to accelerate when they are called for national duties.
Looking forward, Hesson’s long -term goal is to leave a legacy that extends beyond the immediate results. “I would like Pakistan’s audience to say,” This is a great team to watch, “he reflected.
In the following years, Hesson hopes to lay a foundation for success that he will afford after his departure, ensuring a smooth succession for future coaches.
“If when you leave, things are falling, then you haven’t done a great job,” he concluded, adding that his focus is on building a sustainable model.
Hesson’s approach seems to be driven by a strong sense of long -term planning, with the aim of improving not only the current team but also to form Pakistan’s future for the coming years.
