A memoir by Earl Spencer, brother of the late Diana, Princess of Wales, has gone on sale (Express Tribune).
Why the palace is watching
Spencer delivered the eulogy at his sister’s funeral in 1997, in which he criticised the royal family directly and promised that her sons would not be confined by “duty and tradition”. It remains among the most pointed public statements ever made about the institution by a member of an aristocratic family connected to it.
A memoir by that author, on sale now, is a different order of publication from most royal books.
The month this lands in
This newspaper reported on 8 September that King Charles had written to confirm that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are not working members of the royal family and that their His and Her Royal Highness styles “remain in abeyance”, after their return to Britain — and on 9 September that the Sussexes said they had been given about an hour’s notice.
What is not established
The memoir’s contents, publisher and any specific claims about the royal family have not been described in the reporting we have seen, and no palace comment has been reported. We have not read the book.
