Israel blames Iran for oil tanker attack near Oman’s coast

TEL AVIV/TEHRAN/ISLAMABAD: Israel has blamed Iran for masterminding an attack on one of their oil tankers near Oman’s coast in the Arabian Sea which led to the deaths of two crew members that included a British and a Romanian national.

Operated by Zodiac Maritime, a London based company, MV Mercer Street was just off Oman’s coast when the attack happened on Thursday. It has been alleged that this was a drone attack.

Eyal Ofer, a wealthy Israeli shipping tycoon serves as the chairman of Zodiac Maritime. The company confirmed that it was still investigating the incident.

Israel’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Yair Lapid termed this attack as “Iranian Terrorism” whilst saying that “Iran is not just an Israeli problem…the world must not be silent.

A UK government spokesperson also expressed alarm over the situation and confirmed that the UK was trying to “urgently establish the facts.

“Our thoughts are with the loved ones of a British national who has died following an incident on a tanker off the coast of Oman,” they said.

In February 2021, Iranian nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh was gunned down by a one ton automated gun smuggled in pieces to Iran from Israel.

Reliable sources from Tel Aviv had confirmed to this correspondent that Israeli intelligence agency, Mossad was behind Fakhrizadeh’s hit.

Whispers in Islamabad suggest that the attack on MV Mercer Street may be a retaliation for Fakhrizadeh’s killing.

Zodiac Maritime confirmed that the vessel was under the control of her own crew and was moving to a safe location under a US Navy escort.
