US Secretary of Health Robert F Kennedy JR plans to announce a relationship between autism and the prenatal exposure to popular pain in pain and medical fever Tylenol, generally sold as acetaminophen in the United States and Paracetamol in the United Kingdom, said Wall Street Journal.

What does the research say about the use of acetaminophen during pregnancy?

There is no constant proof of the connection between the use of the drug and autism. Recent studies have drawn conflicting conclusions about whether its use during pregnancy can create risks for a growing fetus.

A study of about 2.5 million children in Sweden found no causal relationship between the exposure of the uterus to acetaminophen and neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism spectrum disorder or disturbance hyperactivity disorder.

A 2025 review of 46 previous studies proposed a relationship between the prenatal report on acetaminophen and the increased risks of these situations, but researchers at the ICAHN Medical School at Mount Sinai at Harvard University said the study did not prove that the drug has caused the results. They informed that pregnant women should continue to use acetaminophen as needed, at the lowest possible dose and for the shortest possible period.

Large 2025 studies from Europe and Japan have suggested that what may seem to be minor correlations between the use of prenatal acetaminophen and neurodevelopmental disorders can in fact be due to confusing factors, that is, other subjects, such as Diseases.

What are the medical guidelines for pregnant women?

Acetaminophen/paracetamol is the recommended first -line drug for pain and fever during pregnancy in guidelines from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists in Britain and other medical organizations.

The use of ibuprofen, naproxen and other non -steroidal anti -inflammatory drugs in the third trimester can lead to genetic abnormalities, both societies warn.

Pregnant women should talk to their doctor if they intend to take any of these medicines, ACOG advises.

What are the risks of not reducing fever during pregnancy?

Incorporated maternal fever and pain during fetal development can increase the dangers of genetic abnormalities, such as heart disease, abdominal wall defects and nervous tube defects in which the brain and spinal cord do not form. Unsprted pain and fever have also been linked to premature birth, low birth weight and elimination.

In pregnant women, unprocessed fever and pain can cause high blood pressure, dehydration, depression and anxiety and other health problems.

Why is the issue at the center now?

The allegations of a potential association were the focus of the pipelines brought by parents and autism activists to the United States against retailers, charging that they had failed to warn consumers that Kenvue’s Tylenol and its general publications could cause ADHD.

In December 2023, a federal US judge hit a blow to hundreds of such lawsuits, banning witness to experts from testimony after finding that they had no scientific evidence of their allegations.

In August 2024, referring to this ruling, the judge dismissed all cases in the federal court. A US appeal court is scheduled to hear arguments next month in an appeal of this ruling, according to court records.
