Houthi Official Threatens Pakistan and Türkiye Over Yemen

A member of Ansar Allah's political bureau said the Houthis would strike Pakistan and Türkiye with an iron fist if they joined the war alongside Saudi Arabia — the first time Pakistan has been named directly.

Houthi Official Threatens Pakistan and Türkiye Over Yemen

A senior Houthi figure has threatened Pakistan and Türkiye directly if either joins the war alongside Saudi Arabia (Express Tribune).

Who said it

Mohammed al-Bukhaiti, a member of Ansar Allah’s political bureau and governor of Dhamar.

What he said

“By God, if Türkiye and Pakistan become involved, we will strike them with an iron fist.”

He said the Houthis would “teach” both countries a lesson if they joined what he called Saudi aggression, while acknowledging sympathy for Yemen among the two countries’ populations.

Why this is a first

Pakistan has been a party to this argument for six weeks without being a party to the war. It signed the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement on 7 August, condemned attacks on Saudi Arabia, took the matter to the Security Council, and watched a drone intercepted near Makkah.

Through all of that, no combatant had named it. One now has.

What has been said on the Pakistani side

| | | |—|—| | 16 September | Defence Minister Khawaja Asif: bound by “an eternal agreement”; would defend Makkah and Madinah regardless | | 18 September | DG ISPR: “we will go to any extent”; on presence, “the words express themselves fully once we say that we are there” |

The DG ISPR described the commitment as unconditional.

How much weight the threat carries

Less than the language suggests, and more than nothing.

Al-Bukhaiti is a political bureau member and a provincial governor, not a military commander, and this is rhetoric aimed at deterring an intervention that has not occurred. The Houthis have no capacity to strike Pakistan, which is roughly 2,000 kilometres from Yemen across the Arabian Sea.

What they do have is reach over shipping in two straits, and Pakistan imports the overwhelming share of the fuel it burns through those waters. A threat that cannot reach Karachi can still reach a tanker bound for it.

The condition attached

The threat is conditional on Pakistani involvement in Yemen. No Pakistani official has said Pakistan will fight in Yemen, and the Makkah pact is described by all three signatories as defensive.

What is not established

No Pakistani response to al-Bukhaiti’s remarks had been reported at the time of writing. It has not been stated whether the Houthi leadership as a whole endorses the formulation, and no specific capability has been claimed against either country.
