‘Govt should facilitate Musharraf’s return’, says Nawaz Sharif

LONDON/DUBAI/ISLAMABAD: Mian Nawaz Sharif has said that he has no personal enmity with General Pervaiz Musharraf and that the government should facilitate his return.

In a tweet, the three time Prime Minister wrote that he didn’t want anyone to face the pain of their loved ones like he did and that he was praying for Musharraf’s good health.

Recently, Musharraf’s health deteriorated and his family expressed a desire to take him to Pakistan so that he could be buried in his home land.

In 1999, Gen Musharraf took power from then Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in a bloodless coup, arresting him and putting him in solitary confinement.

After a deal brokered by Saudi Arabia, Nawaz Sharif was allowed to leave for Saudi Arabia.

In 2004, when the Sharif family’s patriarch and Nawaz Sharif’s father, Mian Sharif died, General Musharraf did not allow Nawaz Sharif, his brother Shehbaz Sharif or his wife Begum Kulsoom Nawaz to attend the funeral.

Despite a checkered history, Nawaz Sharif has not only expressed no personal enmity towards his previous arch-political nemesis but he has also called on the current government, led by his younger brother, Mian Shehbaz Sharif to facilitate Musharraf’s return to Pakistan.

“This is MNS,” Mohtarma Maryam Nawaz Sharif tweeted shortly after Nawaz Sharif’s public statement.

Khawaja Asif also paid accolades to his leader stating that this act of benevolence would reduce the divisions and differences in our society.

Maryam’s political secretary, Zeeshan Malik wrote: “This is how our leader is”, in response to Nawaz Sharif’s act of forgiveness.

The hashtag #ProudOfYouNawazSharif began trending shortly after Nawaz Sharif’s tweet.
