Yousaf Raza Gilani appointed Senate Opposition Leader, notification issued

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) stalwart, Yousaf Raza Gilani has been appointed the Senate Opposition leader according to a notification issued by the Senate Secretariat.

Former PM Yousaf Raza Gilani arrived in Parliament House flanked with Sherry Rehman. The duo also met Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani.

According to Sherry Rehman, the application had been filed with signatures from a total of 30 senators which include 21 from the PPP, two from the Awami National Party, one from the Jamaat-i-Islami, two from members belonging to Fata and four from the independent group of Dilawar Khan.

Sources within the PPP identified Senators Hidayatullah Khan, Hilal-ur-Rehman, Mushtaq Ahmed and Nawabzada Arbab Umar Farooq as some of the names who had signed the agreement.

Rubbishing claims that this was the funeral of PDM, Sherry Rehman held that this was the PPP’s right since they had the most seats after the PTI in the Senate.

While negotiations within the PDM are under way to resolve the dispute between the PML-N and the PPP regarding the post of Senate’s Opposition Leader, no consensus has been made yet.

The PML-N had also submitted an application to the Senate Secretariat, nominating Azam Nazeer Tarar as the Senate opposition leader. However, Tarrar enjoys the support of 17 PML-N senators, 5 senators from JUI-F, and four more members from the National Party and PkMAP bringing the total to 26.
