Six teenagers are due to go on trial in camera on Monday in connection with the shocking 2020 beheading of French history teacher Samuel Paty, a crime that deeply upset the nation.
The teacher had displayed caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) during a lesson on freedom of expression, angering some Muslim parents who consider such depictions blasphemous.
During the trial, a 13-year-old girl at the time, who initially claimed that Patti had instructed the Muslim students to leave the room before displaying the cartoons, now faces false charges. It was found that she was not present at the incident.
Pati, aged 47, met a tragic end outside his school in a Paris suburb, attacked by an 18-year-old assailant of Chechen origin, who was then shot and killed by police. The other five juveniles, aged between 14 and 15 at the time of the attack, face charges related to premeditated criminal conspiracy or ambush. They are suspected of either tipping Patti off to the killer or helping track him out of the school.
All six juveniles, protected by anonymity because of their age, entered court Monday wearing hoods to conceal their identities. Antoine Ory, a lawyer representing one of the defendants, expressed his client’s remorse and fear of facing Paty’s family.
In a statement delivered through lawyer Louis Cailliez, Paty’s sister Mickaelle mourned the tragedy, saying her brother would still be alive had it not been for a “fateful union of little cowards, big lies”. The hearings, scheduled to last until December 8, are being held behind closed doors.
In addition to the minors, eight adults also face charges and will be brought before a special criminal court. The trial follows a recent incident, nearly two years after Patty’s murder, in which a 20-year-old fatally stabbed a teacher and seriously injured two others in northern France, rekindling concerns about violence.
France, in recent years, has faced a series of attacks, including the infamous 2015 gun attack on the offices of Charlie Hebdo, a satirical magazine that had published the same cartoons that Pati showed in his class.
