Free & fair elections not possible in three months, says ECP

ISLAMABAD: Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has informed President Dr Arif Alvi that elections can be held in October 2022 as ECP requires four months for preparation of free & fair elections.

While responding to the President’s letter, the ECP said that it is difficult to hold elections in three months but ECP is ready to hold elections in October 2022.

According to the constitution and law, four more months will be required for delimitation.

The ECP said that without new constituencies, the elections would be illegal and could be challenged in court.

Earlier, the Election Commission of Pakistan was conveyed in written by President Dr Arif Alvi on Wednesday to to propose dates for holding general elections in the country under Article 224(2) of the Constitution.

The move comes after the National Assembly deputy speaker threw out a no-confidence motion against PM Imran and the president dissolved the lower house of Parliament on the former’s advice on April 3.

The Supreme Court is currently hearing the matter to decide the legality of the deputy speaker’s ruling and the subsequent actions and orders of the prime minister and the president.
