Former Japanese PM Shinzo Abe shot during a speech in Nara

NARA: Japan’s former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has been taken to hospital after apparently being shot during a campaign speech in the western city of Nara.

Japanese media reported that Abe collapsed while giving a campaign speech for a Liberal Democratic Party candidate at around 11:30 a.m. local time, ahead of an upper house election this weekend.

Police said Abe appeared to have been shot from behind with a shotgun.

Abe’s condition is “unknown” and “is still being confirmed.”

Political violence is rare in Japan, a country with strict gun regulations.

Abe served two terms as prime minister to become Japan’s longest-serving premier before stepping down in 2020 citing ill health.

But he has remained a dominant presence over the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), controlling one of its major factions.
