Angel City FC have denounced the “recent actions and statements” of Stefany Ferrer Van Ginkel, a former player who appears to have been caught on camera giving Nazi salutes to protesters in Beverly Hills last Sunday (November 5).
The video shows Ferrer Van Ginkel shouting “Heil Hitler!” and doing the Sieg Heil salute from the passenger window of a car driven by a man, immediately went viral after it was recently posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, by the watchdog group StopAntisemitism.
The pro-Israel crowd responded to her move by chanting “Shame on you!”
The Beverly Hills Police Department said in an email to The times on Thursday morning that the incident is being investigated.
“The rally took place on Sunday, November 5, 2023, in the city of Beverly Hills. Our Department is aware of the video/incident that occurred during this gathering,” Sergeant Jeffrey Newman wrote.
“The incident is currently under investigation and I do not wish to speculate on further information at this time. Our Department respects the importance of protected speech, but will also actively investigate any criminal acts that may have occurred.”
In response to Ferrer Van Ginkel’s latest move and amid rising tensions over the Israel-Hamas war in the US, Angel City FC took to X to announce they have distanced themselves from the player.
The 25-year-old midfielder posted a video on her Instagram account the night after the incident, before the account was deactivated, which appeared to refer to the incident at the rally.
In the clip, Ferrer Van Ginkel sits silently next to a man, who apologizes on behalf of both of them.
“I know we’ve approached the situation with hate and made it worse with our actions,” the man says in the video.
“We brought children and it’s the wrong way to approach any situation we live in. All we can do is get better, learn from it. We cannot change the past. And we just wanted to apologize and ask you to understand and stop the hate. We just want to spread love from now on. We understand that we were wrong.”
Ferrer Van Ginkel grew up in Brazil, appeared on a British reality show and played with Tigres of Mexico’s Liga MX Femenil before playing for Angel City during its inaugural season in 2022.
However, her contract was not renewed after that campaign and she does not appear to have played professionally since.
