ECP slapped Vawda Rs50,000 for delaying dual nationality case
ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Tuesday slapped a fine of Rs50,000 on Federal Minister Faisal Vawda over his absence from proceedings in a dual nationality case and for “repeatedly asking for postponements”.
The fine was imposed by a five-member bench, headed by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja, after Vawda’s lawyer failed to appear in front of the ECP during the hearing of a petition seeking the minister’s disqualification due to his dual nationality.
The ECP stopped Vawda’s lawyer from presenting his arguments in the case. “We gave him a chance to explain his US citizenship but he has been trying to delay the case”, the bench remarked.
The federal minister has been summoned in person at the next hearing on February 24.
