Iran said it will continue nuclear talks with European forces after “serious, honest and detailed” conversations on Friday, the first such face -to -face meeting since Israel and the US bombed Iran last month.
Prior to the meeting in Constantinople, Iran also pushed the proposals of expanding the United Nations resolution ratified by a 2015 agreement, approaching the end, designed to limit its nuclear program.
The European Union delegations and the so -called E3 group of France, Britain and Germany met with Iranian counterparts for about four hours at the Iranian consulate for talks stated by the UN nuclear observer that it could provide an opening to Iraine.
Iran and Europeans present ideas
Deputy Foreign Minister Iranian Kazem Gharibabadi later said that both sides had presented specific ideas about relief of sanctions and the nuclear issue.
“While we are seriously criticizing their positions on the recent war of aggression against our people, we explained our principles, including the so -called snapback mechanism,” he said. “It was agreed that consultations on this issue will continue.”
The European countries, along with China and Russia, are the rest of the 2015 agreement – from which the US withdrew in 2018 – which raised sanctions in Iran in return for restrictions on its nuclear program. An October 18th deadline is approaching quickly when the analysis of the agreement expires.
At this point, all UN sanctions on Iran will be lifted unless the “snapback” mechanism is activated at least 30 days before. This would automatically reinstall these sanctions, which target the sectors of hydrocarbons in banking and defense.
To give time for this to happen, the E3 set a deadline for late August to revive diplomacy. Diplomats say Iran want to take specific steps to persuade them to expand the deadline of up to six months.
Europeans want nuclear commitments from Iran
Iran will need to undertake commitments on key issues, including final talks with Washington, full cooperation with the UN International Atomic Energy Organization (IAEA) and represents 400 kg (880 pounds) from its highly enriched celestial weapons.
Prior to the talks, a Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman said Tehran believed that the debate on expanding the UN Security Council vote was “meaningless and unfounded”.
IAEA chief Rafael Grossi said he was optimistic that nuclear inspection visits could restart this year and that it was important to discuss technical details now. “We need to agree on where to go, how to do it, we need to hear Iran about what they think should be the precautions to be taken,” he told reporters in Singapore.
The United States held five rounds of talks with Iran before its June air strikes, which US President Donald Trump said it had “eliminated” a program that Washington and Israeli ally say it aims to obtain a nuclear bomb.
However, NBC News said today’s and former US officials say a later US assessment found that while strikes destroyed most of the three targeted nuclear points, the other two were not so badly damaged.
Iran refuses to search for a nuclear weapon and says its nuclear program is intended exclusively for political purposes.
