Maryanne Trump Barry, 86, the older sister of former US President Donald Trump and a retired federal judge, was found dead in her Upper East Side apartment, according to the New York Times.
She was discovered at her Fifth Avenue residence around 4 a.m. and pronounced dead at the scene.
Maryanne Trump Barry’s cause of death has yet to be determined by the medical examiner, with no obvious signs of trauma reported.
In 1999, Maryanne Trump Barry was nominated by President Bill Clinton to the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. While her brother, Donald Trump, assumed the presidency, she operated mostly under the radar, having previously worked as an entrepreneur and in television.
Serving on the Philadelphia-based appeals court for two decades, she retired in 2019 amid a civil misdemeanor investigation into her family’s suspected tax evasion.
That investigation, sparked by a New York Times exposé, looked into whether Barry violated judicial conduct guidelines by engaging in the disclosed financial irregularities. A spokesman for the 77-year-old former president did not immediately respond of CNBC requests for comment.
Throughout Donald Trump’s life, Marian has been one of his key advisors and closest confidants. However, their relationship soured in his final year in office when tapes of Barry disparaging her brother surfaced and were released by Mary Trump, Donald Trump’s niece and an outspoken critic of his presidency.
In those recordings, Barry criticized Trump for his tweeting, lying, lack of preparation and changing stories, describing him as “cruel” without principles.
A notable revelation from Mary Trump’s book, “Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created The World’s Most Dangerous Man,” claimed that Barry revealed that Trump had someone take the SAT exams for him.
Barry, on the recording, showed a strained relationship with her brother, saying she hadn’t asked him for a pardon since 1981, suggesting Trump tried to take credit for her successful legal career.
The life of Maryanne Trump Barry, characterized by her judicial career and complicated family dynamics, adds a complex layer to the narrative surrounding the Trump family, highlighting the internal conflicts and controversies that have shaped its public image.
