Death toll in Peshawar mosque explosion rises to 56

Fifty-six people were martyred and more than one hundred ninety-four injured in a blast at a mosque in Kocha Risaldar Qissa Khwani Bazar Peshawar today (Friday).

The injured have been shifted to Lady Reading Hospital Peshawar.

Police official Waheed Khan said the death toll will likely rise as many of the wounded are in critical condition.

Waheed Khan said the explosion occurred as worshippers had collected in the Kucha Risaldar mosque in Peshawar’s old city for Friday prayers. Ambulances rushed through congested narrow streets carrying the wounded to Lady Reading Hospital, where doctors worked feverishly.

One witness saw the attacker enter the mosque before Friday prayers and open “fire with a pistol”, picking out the worshippers “one-by-one”.

He “then blew himself up”, Ali Asghar said.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the apparent suicide bombing.
