LAHORE: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Hamza Shehbaz Sharif will take oath as the new Punjab chief minister after he was “elected” to the office in a symbolic session of the provincial assembly held at a Lahore hotel yesterday.
According to the PMLN MPA Khalil Tahir Sindhu, former Punjab Governor Chaudhry Sarwar will administer the oath to the “newly-elected” chief minister at Lahore’s Bagh-e-Jinnah.
He also shared that Punjab Assembly Deputy Speaker Dost Muhamad Mazari will also meet with PML-N leadership today.
199 MPAs elected Hamza Shehbaz Sharif as the new Chief Minister of Punjab in a symbolic session of the Punjab Assembly held in Faletti’s Hotel on Wednesday.
186 MPAs were needed to have a majority in the Punjab Assembly while 199 MPAs elected Hamza Shehbaz Sharif as CM giving the new Punjab government a majority of 13 votes.
Members of the Jahangir Tareen and Aleem Khan groups also supported Hamza Shehbaz Sharif as CM Punjab.
Hamza Shehbaz Sharif warmly met Aleem Khan in the hotel, signalling the close ties between the Sharifs and Aleem Khan.
In an exclusive conversation with The Pakistan Daily, Mohtarma Maryam Nawaz Sharif said: “I have come for the people of Punjab who are being robbed of their mandate.
Maryam came to the assembly session flanked by her cousin Hamza Shehbaz Sharif. As soon as the election was over, Maryam and Hamza shared a pleasant moment when Maryam congratulated Hamza on his win.
Taking to Twitter, Maryam Nawaz Sharif announced that Hamza Shehbaz Sharif would be the new CM Punjab.
On the other hand, Moonis Elahi congratulated Hamza Shehbaz Sharif for being elected as the Chief Minister of Faletti’s Hotel.
Earlier, the PTI submitted a No Confidence motion against Deputy Speaker Punjab Assembly Dost Mohammad Mazari after he refused the order withdrawing the notice to postpone the session to April 16.
Pervaiz Elahi who is the government’s candidate for CM Punjab is also the Speaker of the Punjab Assembly.
