The Pakistan Peoples Party has rejected as “incorrect and unfounded” reports circulating on social media that its chairman, Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, is engaged or about to be married (Dawn).
The denial
The statement came from Murtaza Wahab, the Karachi Mayor and PPP leader, in a post on X late on Saturday night.
“The news story regarding Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s engagement or wedding is incorrect and unfounded,” Wahab wrote, as The Express Tribune reproduced the post. Dawn reported the same phrase.
Note what the denial covers. Wahab addressed the engagement and the wedding. His post does not mention the president’s travel, which is the other element the online claims turned on.
What was claimed
Posts circulating over the weekend asserted that President Asif Ali Zardari had travelled to Europe with family members to fix a date for his son’s wedding, and that Bilawal was to marry into a European family.
The accounts did not agree with each other. Some placed the supposed match in Austria; others in Liechtenstein. No source named the woman said to be involved, produced a date, or pointed to anything on the record. The Pakistan Daily is not repeating the personal particulars asserted in those posts, because none of them is established.
What is actually established
One thing is confirmed, and it is narrow. On 27 August, the Presidency posted on X that Zardari “has proceeded abroad on a private visit”, and gave no further details, Dawn reported.
That is the whole of the public record on the trip. Nothing official connects it to a wedding, and no destination has been announced. The online claims took an unexplained private visit and supplied a motive for it.
How it spread
Daily Ausaf reported that wedding preparations were under way, citing unspecified sources, and said the president was on a private tour of Europe in connection with the matter, according to Dawn. That report, Dawn said, was later deleted.
Geo News published its own account at 3:39am on Sunday. It rested on unnamed “sources” — its standfirst still reads “Sources claim President Asif Ali Zardari, accompanied by family members, visited Vaduz to set a date for his son’s wedding.” Geo updated the piece at 2:28pm; it now carries the PPP’s rejection and says the reported development “remains unverified”.
Unresolved
Bilawal has not commented, and neither has his family — both Dawn and Geo confirm that. The PPP’s only word on the matter is Wahab’s post.
The Presidency has not said where Zardari went or when he returns. Until it does, the trip and the rumour remain two separate things, joined only by social media.
