The number of flood deaths in Central Texas increased to 32 of 27, Sheriff County Larry Leitha said at a press conference on Saturday.
“We have recovered some additional bodies … There are 32 dead. 18 of them are adults and 14 are children,” he said.
Rescuers continued a frantic search for survivors, including dozens still missing from the Summer Girls’ camp.
Sheriff’s office in Kerr County in Texas said 800 people had been evacuated from the area as flood waters retreated to the area around the Guadalupe River, about 85 miles [137 km] Northwest of San Antonio.
At least 23 to 25 people from the Mystic Summer Camp camp were missing, most of them reported they were young girls. The waters of the river increased 29 feet quickly near the camp.
The US National Meteorological Nations Service said the emergency flood has ended heavily for the Kerr County, the focus of floods, following the thunderstorms that threw as much as a rain leg early Friday.
A flood clock, however, remains in force until 19:00 on Saturday by San Antonio-Austin, Texas, area, with scattered showers expected throughout the day, said Allison Santorelli, a meteorologist with the NWS Weather Center at College Park.
US President Donald Trump said the federal government is working with government and local officials to respond to the floods. “Melania and I pray for all families affected by this horrible tragedy.
Pakistan prime minister, Shehbaz Sharif, also expressed the sadness over the loss of lives in the tragic floods in the X account, saying: “Having undergone a similar incident in northwestern Pakistan just a few days ago, we can fully understand the pain and pain of the mourners.”
Dalton Rice, director of the city for Kerrville, a seat of the county, told reporters on Friday that extreme floods hit before dawn with little or no warning, excluding authorities to issue advanced evacuation orders, as the Guadalupe river was rapidly climbing over the Guadalupe.
“This happened very quickly, in a very short time that could not be predicted, even with radar,” Rice said. “This happened in less than a two -hour period.”
Emergency management officials had already warned on Thursday that West and Central Texas faced heavy rains and flood threats in the following days, citing the forecasts of the National Meteorological Service before the weekend.
However, the weather forecasts, “did not foresee the amount of rain we saw,” said W. Nim Kidd, director of the Texas emergency management department, said at a press conference on Friday night.
The weekend’s destruction reflects a catastrophic flood almost 40 years ago along the Guadeloupe River, where a bus and a truck abandoned a church camp faced the flood waters and 10 teenagers drowned in the 1987 attempt to escape.
