RAWALPINDI: At least 25 people have been reportedly injured in an explosion on Sunday near Rawalpindi’s Ganj Mandi Police Station.
Twenty-two people have been moved to the DHQ Hospital while three were treated at the spot. Three of them in precarious condition, rescue officials said. The incident took place in the jurisdiction of Ganjmandi police station.
The bomb disposal squad and other law enforcement agencies were rushed to the place of the blast.
According to police officials, a time device was used in the explosion which took place outside of a filtration plant.
Initial reports suggested that it was a hand grenade attack but City Police Officer (CPO) Rawalpindi Mohammad Ahsan Younas said that it was too soon to ascertain the nature of the blast.
He said the police and bomb disposal squad are collecting evidence from the scene. “This is a terrorist incident but it would be premature to say anything else on it,” he added.
“We have also applied security measures at the DHQ Hospitals.
Mohammad Ahsan Younas further noted that it was the second attack near a police station in 10 days.
The CPO added that on December 4, one man was killed and seven other people were injured in a blast carried out using an improvised explosive device near Pir Wadhai police station.
Chief Minister of Punjab Usman Buzdar has taken notice of a blast near Rawalpindi and ordered investigation of the incident. The chief minister has also called report from the Regional Police Officer (RPO) Rawalpindi.
He has directed the officials to ensure best possible medical facilities to the injured people.
