WASHINGTON:
The US Federal Bank on Wednesday reduced interest rates for the first time this year, pointing out the slower profits from work and employment risks, as policy -makers are facing increased pressure under President Donald Trump.
The Fed cut the reference rate by 25 basis points in a series of 4.0 % and 4.25 %, while the pencil in two more possible cuts this year.
Fed President Jerome Powell stressed that the Central Bank remains “strongly committed” to maintaining its independence by politics when asked about adding a key adviser to Trump between its ranks this week.
He added that the Fed was “right to wait and see how invoices and inflation and the labor market evolved” before reducing rates for the first time in nine months.
Only the new Fed Governor Stephen Miran – who served in Trump’s administration – voted against the decision. Favored a greater reduction in the interest rate of 50 base points.
The other 11 voting members of the Federal Open Market Federal Market (FOMC) supported the trimester cut.
This was the first meeting with Miran, who had chaired the White House Council of Finance. It was sworn in shortly before the two -day rally began on Tuesday, following a confirmation of the Senate SWIFT on Monday night.
The Fed is facing competitive pressures in adapting rates, with Trump’s sweeping invoices supplying the risks to inflation, while the labor market weakens.
The Fed usually holds the rates at higher levels to achieve inflation, but could reduce rates to support the labor market.
On Wednesday, the Fed raised 2025 growth to 1.6 % from June 1.4 %, and made no change in unemployment and inflation forecasts.
Trump has intensified the pressure on the Fed this year, repeatedly calling for major interest rate cuts and criticizing Powell.
