The Bollywood sphere has been rocked by a recent spate of deepfake incidents, causing an uproar and sparking concerns about the spread of misleading or fabricated content through the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI). The latest incident involves digitally altered images of popular stars, Katrina Kaif and Rashmika Mandanna, causing alarm in the film fraternity and the general public.
The controversy intensified after a deep fake picture surfaced of Katrina, who is set to appear in the upcoming film Tiger 3. Initially, a legitimate picture showed the actor taking part in a scene where she is seen fighting a Hollywood stuntwoman, dressed up. a TOWEL. This scene is also seen in the trailer of Tiger 3. However, as reported by NDTV, a manipulated version of this image has gone viral, depicting her in an edited outfit—a low-cut white top and matching bottoms instead of the original towel.
The altered image, created through artificial intelligence tools capable of manipulating facial features in videos and photos, has sparked outrage and strong reactions on social media platforms. Expressing dismay and concern, many expressed their strong disapproval of the transformed image, calling it a shameful act of using AI technology to distort a woman’s appearance, which could potentially have legal consequences.
What is more worrying is that this is not an isolated incident in the Bollywood industry. Earlier, a deepfake video of actor Rashmika Mandanna surfaced, depicting a woman dressed in black entering an elevator, but with Rashmika’s face artificially superimposed on the figure.
The spread of this falsified video raised red flags about the unreliability of information circulating online, raising questions about the rapid spread of falsified content. Veteran Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan had earlier sought legal action after the defaced video started circulating online. Rashmika herself expressed her concern over the incident, calling it “extremely scary”.
Amidst these growing concerns, the Indian government has taken a stand by sending a reminder on social media platforms about the established rules. The move comes after the viral deepfake video sparked concerns about the misuse of artificial intelligence to spread misinformation, prompting greater vigilance to curb the spread of such misleading content.
